Titles for the opening scene

For the opening of our movie I have done 12 second titles opening, I included our productions name and the title of the movie. Also I found an interesting image with and eye and world in space, which I thought would look very affective for our symbol. So I did a lot of work on it to make the eyelid move. I’ve used programs like Paint, Photoshop and Premiere element.

I edited the image and then put them one after another to create a movement on Premiere element. It worked out very impressive. Also I found a non authorised music; the song is very mystical and hunting which makes the image more interesting. I used simple font and text style to make it look professional, so the viewers believed that it is a real movie. Our movie is a murder mystery, so the opening has to be quite serious and representative.

Further PLanning and ideas for opening Sequence.

This shot taken from Mr and Mrs Smith, gave us an idea for one of the main shots in our opening sequence. In this scene they are with their marriage councilor but you never actually get to see his face only hear his voice. This is very similar to the type of shot we have decided to use to for the shot between our main character and his pyschiatrist. the only difference is that you will be able to see the back of the pyschiatrist's head so it an obvious point of view shot.

I found this shot on Youtube. It gives us an idea of the kind of atmosphere we want to create during our flashbacks where he murders a fellow pupil. It is quite scary and dark and this shot type will tell the audience that something bad is about to happen.

Opening Sequence
Tolu Lawal
16/01/09

Scene 1 – this will be set in the Hopeman mixed common room. It will be a point of view shot from the psychiatrist’s point of view. So you only get to see the back if the psychiatrist’s head.

The next shot in this scene will be a close up of his feet tapping continuously in order to convey a his nerves to the audience.

Scene 2- will be a flashback. This will be done in the woods and will be black and white making the audience aware of the fact that it is a flash back. It will consist of him walking thorough the woods after the boy who is alone and plunging the knife into him several times. We will have to film this scene just before it gets too dark so the camera is still able to pick up the footage.

Scene 3- this scene will be a series of flashbacks between the common room/ psychiatrist’s office and our final setting. This will be a range of different situations where his victims are bullying him. And we will flash back to the various incidents including name calling and tone throwing and flash forwards to close ups of our offender’s face.

Our Opening Sequence
12/01/09
Tolu Lawal
Maria and I have chosen to do a kind of thriller for our opening sequence. Our story is based on a man who is forced to look back at his school days when a psychiatrist asks him about it. He confesses to killing a fellow pupil. He is finally comes face to face with the realities of his actions when he is faced with a series of flashbacks 5 years later. If we were going to make the full movie, it would consist of him telling his story of how he ended killing this fellow student who bullied him throughout his school years and we would explore the reasons as to why he was willing to commit murder. Our opening sequence will only consist of the first little part of story as we only have two minutes to grasp the audience’s attention. We will require 4 main characters, the Psychiatrist our main character, the younger version of our main character, and his victim. We will also require another 2 actors to play the victim’s friends and close allies. We will have three main mise en scenes. The main one will be the psychiatrist’s room. This will consist of two sofas by the window and a desk separating them. The other settings will be the murder scene in the woods and the finall setting we require is the scene in school where the boys would be picking on him. I think this will be filmed outside G House near the lake.

Preliminary Task

For Preliminary Task which consists filming two people having a conversation i made up a story line of a doctor having a conversation with patient who has headaches. For the mise-en-scene i used a room with a table, two chairs and a lap top on the desk to make the official atmosphere of a doctors office. I placed scene in a way to make 180 degree rule work easy for filming.

As i had to concentrate on filming i tried to make unusual shots and zooms. So i started the first shot to be the doctor looking on her watch and realising that she is late with a wide shot. Next shot was her waling towards the door. I decided to make another shot of her walking but with a zoom only on her feet to make an affect of moving motion. Them i am filming her opening the door and sitting down(pan shot). I used shot reaction shot to make a good affect of a conversation, also i made different zooms to make it more moving. i zoomed on doctors hands while she was ti ping, also when she was listening to the patient she was moving her hands which on i made a zoom as well. The last shot was a pan shot of the patient standing up and leaving the room.

I had a lot of shots to edit. I made the video black and white because i filmed it in two days and the light was different every day, so the black and white affect didn't show this. I

Preliminary Task

The previous ideas I had for my preliminary task have changed. I have decided my story is about a boy breaking up with his girlfriend. I have decided not to shoot the conversation in the 6th form centre, but in the little room that separates two classes. They will both be in school uniform so the only props required will be the chair and the table. The first shot will be of the boy sat at the table awaiting her arrival. The next shot will be a low wide angle shot of the girl entering the door, followed by a tracking shot of the girl walking towards the seat. Then there will be a shot of her in the seat. There will be two sets of shot reaction shots between the two characters as they exchange a few lines of dialogue in which he ends their relationship. The final shot will be a close up of the girl looking distraught.

This week on premier elements, we have been learning how to add certain effects to a readymade trailer. We have learnt how to change the picture, increase and decrease the volume of the music and how to create a split screen. This helps us to familiarise ourselves with the programme enabling us to make the best opening sequence and make use of the special effects the programme offers. The opening sequences we watched in class included Pulp Fiction, Elizabeth, Moulin Rouge and The Godfather. They all introduced the movie to us in different ways; the most effective introduction would Moulin Rouge. It started off with an establishing shot that gave the audience an idea of where the movie was set then it zooms into a particular building and you are faced with a man on a typewriter. The lyrics of the music match what the man is typing. This is a very effective form of narration. The sequence includes flash backs of the show girls dancing in a bar. This is a good way of grasping the audience’s attention. In The Godfather, it begins with a funeral but instead of narrations the story appears written on the screen. This is very effective and I would want to use it in my opening sequence as i feel narration can sometimes distract from the rest of the scene if it is not done properly so having the words written out is a lot more effective. Also in Pulp Fiction there was no music playing in the background, just a host of asynchronous sounds which I thought was different and kept me interested. Elizabeth the use of the bird’s eye view shot was very effective as it gave the audience the impression that they were looking down upon the atrocities of the burning and also, you were able to see the setting from a higher angle.
