Preliminary Task

The previous ideas I had for my preliminary task have changed. I have decided my story is about a boy breaking up with his girlfriend. I have decided not to shoot the conversation in the 6th form centre, but in the little room that separates two classes. They will both be in school uniform so the only props required will be the chair and the table. The first shot will be of the boy sat at the table awaiting her arrival. The next shot will be a low wide angle shot of the girl entering the door, followed by a tracking shot of the girl walking towards the seat. Then there will be a shot of her in the seat. There will be two sets of shot reaction shots between the two characters as they exchange a few lines of dialogue in which he ends their relationship. The final shot will be a close up of the girl looking distraught.

This week on premier elements, we have been learning how to add certain effects to a readymade trailer. We have learnt how to change the picture, increase and decrease the volume of the music and how to create a split screen. This helps us to familiarise ourselves with the programme enabling us to make the best opening sequence and make use of the special effects the programme offers. The opening sequences we watched in class included Pulp Fiction, Elizabeth, Moulin Rouge and The Godfather. They all introduced the movie to us in different ways; the most effective introduction would Moulin Rouge. It started off with an establishing shot that gave the audience an idea of where the movie was set then it zooms into a particular building and you are faced with a man on a typewriter. The lyrics of the music match what the man is typing. This is a very effective form of narration. The sequence includes flash backs of the show girls dancing in a bar. This is a good way of grasping the audience’s attention. In The Godfather, it begins with a funeral but instead of narrations the story appears written on the screen. This is very effective and I would want to use it in my opening sequence as i feel narration can sometimes distract from the rest of the scene if it is not done properly so having the words written out is a lot more effective. Also in Pulp Fiction there was no music playing in the background, just a host of asynchronous sounds which I thought was different and kept me interested. Elizabeth the use of the bird’s eye view shot was very effective as it gave the audience the impression that they were looking down upon the atrocities of the burning and also, you were able to see the setting from a higher angle.

Maria T. Prep for monday

This week we have been looking on premier elements and i have edited trailer of Moulin Rouge. Ive learned how to use a lot of functions and editing features in this program. I learned how to change the sound, fade it in and out, edit titles and make them move in different ways, also how to apply different effects to the clips and add effects to the videos when they change to the next one. Also i learned how to make my own designs of graphics.

After watching the four movies in the class i had an idea how to make an introduction to a movie and the different technuiques which make it interresting. Also it was very usefull to see because i could obviously see the different genres of films and get an idea on what kind of film i would like to do for my course work. 'The Godfather' is not a new film so the technology is not as good as it could be now but still it is filmed very good. From the beginning we could tell that it was a film about mafia wars and it was in italy. There was only 2 shots- wide shot and mid shot. The editing was done well. We felt the hotness of the weather by the colour of the scene and the sounds of hot dry weather. There was an introduction written with words to get us understanding what happened in the previous film. 'Moulin Rouge' was introduced to us in a very affective way. The music and the costumes were very effective.

Preliminary Task 18th Nov 08

Maria and I are going to be filming two people walking across a room and having a conversation. Our actors would consist of two teenage boys. We are going to film it in our Commmon Room or the 6th Form Centre. W.e will be filming as sooon as possible and all our filming will be done during the day. We will not need too many extra props just a table and two chairs that are avaliable in the 6th Form Centre. The boys will both be wearing school uniform but Boy 1 will be looking a lot more scruffy than Boy 2. Boy 1 will have a hat on, his shirt untucked and his trouses would be dirty. Boy 2 would be dressed very well, look clean and tidy and cool. Boy 1 will walk into the room and sit down opposite Boy 2 and they will have a conversation. We will attempt to constuct a tracking shot of Boy 1 walkind into the room and a shot reverse shot of both of them having a conversation. In order to acheive this, we will require three cameras. One to film the Tracking shot and the other two will be positioned to record the shot reverse shots between the two boys.
